TIRANA, June 10 – The Academy of Sciences of Albania said it supports the legitimate demands and concerns of Albanians in the Presheva Valley. It also said it stands ready to cooperate in addressing them.
The statement followed a meeting between the Academy’s leadership, institute directors, and Presheva Municipality Mayor Ardita Sinani. She attended together with Agron Hasani, Gazmend Idrizi, and Professor Ilir Zylfiu. Participants discussed issues affecting the local Albanian community.
They raised concerns over policies they described as contributing to gradual and silent depopulation. These included non-recognition of diplomas issued by Kosovan universities and employment practices based on ethnic criteria, according to the discussion.
They also cited forced youth emigration and the alleged “passivisation” of residential addresses through legal mechanisms. In addition, they referred to unequal economic, educational, and cultural development compared with other regions.
At the meeting, participants stressed the need for closer cooperation between academic, educational, and executive institutions. They noted that previous efforts to internationalise these issues through the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the European Parliament had not produced a satisfactory solution.
The Academy said it is ready to contribute scientific analysis of the issues, particularly in history, culture, and education. It added that it will support the development of policy proposals for relevant national and international institutions.
It also said a dedicated structure could improve coordination between the Academy, other institutions, and local authorities and community representatives.
