TIRANA, July 16 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania’s “Smart City” project marks a new stage in strengthening public security through artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the project’s Command and Control Center, Rama said the system is now entering implementation and will gradually expand across the country.
He said artificial intelligence will support police monitoring in schools, on roads and in public spaces. Meanwhile, the system will send real-time alerts when it detects potential security risks.
According to Rama, the technology can identify dangerous situations, including the display of knives in public areas. It can also help police locate wanted individuals more quickly.
In addition, Rama said the system will improve the tracking of vehicles linked to criminal activity. He added that it will also identify vehicles with unpaid obligations as they enter public roads.
The prime minister said the project will later integrate police body cameras with the central monitoring system. He noted that this would strengthen accountability and improve interactions between police officers and the public.
Earlier, Rama said the government aims to extend the monitoring network across Albania within the next 12 months.
Finally, he announced plans to connect the platform with a digital service that will allow citizens to report issues such as illegal parking or unauthorized construction, with real-time verification by the system.
