Albania advances pharmaceutical system digitalisation to improve access to medicines

TIRANA, April 17 – Health and Social Protection Minister Evis Sala outlined reforms to modernise Albania’s pharmaceutical system at a national conference marking 20 years of the Order of Pharmacists. She said the government aims to improve access to safe and effective medicines for citizens.

The ministry is advancing digitalisation to increase transparency and efficiency across the sector. Sala said authorities are working to expand access to innovative medicines and reduce waiting times for patients. She added that reforms seek alignment with European practices.

Policy changes also target a balance between affordability, market sustainability and availability of medicines. Sala highlighted the need for ongoing cooperation with industry stakeholders and healthcare professionals. She said supply chain challenges require closer regional and international coordination.

The government has updated pricing rules to better reflect market conditions and industry constraints. Sala said the patient remains at the centre of all reforms and decisions. She also stressed the growing role of pharmacists in patient care and safe use of medicines.
