TIRANA, July 23 – Albania’s Council of Ministers has approved a multiannual national programme for collecting, managing and using data in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The decision also covers the content of multiannual marine scientific sampling programmes.
The programme sets rules for collecting, managing and using biological, environmental, technical and socio-economic data. It also defines the detailed list of required data. In addition, it identifies mandatory marine research surveys. The programme establishes minimum thresholds for data collection and scientific surveys at sea.
Meanwhile, the data will cover fish stocks, the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems, fishing vessel activity and fleet capacity. The programme also includes socio-economic data on fisheries, aquaculture and the fish processing sector.
Under the decision, authorities will collect the data through a national work plan. The Committee for the Coordination of Scientific, Technical and Economic Research will evaluate national plans and draft work programmes. Finally, the government will appoint a national coordinator for fisheries and aquaculture data collection. The decision also requires authorities to store primary data in electronic registers and protect the information.
