TIRANA, June 18 – The NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting takes place in Brussels at NATO headquarters. Albania takes part in the ministerial. Defence Minister Ermal Nufi attends the meeting.
At the same time, the agenda focuses on security and strategic developments within the Alliance. It also addresses strengthening military capabilities. In addition, it covers modernization of the defence industry. It further includes preparations for the NATO summit in Ankara.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte outlined priorities for the meeting. Allies show progress in building a stronger Europe within a stronger NATO. He calls for more forces and more resources. He also stresses a stronger industrial base. Defence investment increases steadily. Responsibility for security is shared more fairly.
Meanwhile, European allies and Canada increased core defence spending by more than 90 billion dollars in 2025. The figure represents a rise of nearly 20% in one year. Further increases are expected in 2026.
At the same time, the United States adjusts contributions to NATO force structures. Washington remains committed to the Alliance. Other allies increase their commitments. This strengthens NATO 3.0.
In addition, defence production remains a key focus. NATO works with industry to match supply and demand. The Alliance maintains technological advantage.
Similarly, support for Ukraine remains a priority. Allies provide billions in artillery, ammunition, and assistance. This support continues.
Finally, the agenda includes the NATO Nuclear Planning Group and the North Atlantic Council. It also includes the Ukraine Defence Contact Group and preparations for the Ankara summit. A key topic remains the NATO target of up to 5% of GDP for defence and security investment by 2035.
