Albania, Greece and North Macedonia aim to advance their joint bid to nominate the Lake Prespa region for UNESCO World Heritage status. The region spans all three countries.
Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja discussed the initiative with Greece’s new ambassador to Albania, Lambrini Komini. Albania welcomes the proposal from Greece’s Ministry of Culture. Gonxhja said Albania stands ready to advance the process with Greece and North Macedonia.
Gonxhja stressed that the joint bid goes beyond UNESCO status. He said it would bring greater international attention to Lake Prespa. It would also support cultural heritage protection and promotion. In addition, the initiative could create opportunities for sustainable development and quality tourism.
Meanwhile, Gonxhja described Lake Prespa as a shared asset and responsibility for the three countries. He also called it a shared opportunity. The objective is to make Lake Prespa a European model of cross-border cooperation. Gonxhja said nature, culture and tourism can connect the three countries and create new development opportunities for local communities.
