Albania increases PhD funding to over 600,000 euros

Albania has opened its 2026 call for doctoral study funding, with a budget exceeding 600,000 euros. The Ministry of Education and the National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation are running the programme.

Education Minister Mirela Kumbaro said the scheme had entered its second year with clearer rules and much greater financial support. Last year’s budget stood at around 100,000 euros. This year, standard doctoral studies can receive up to 10,000 euros per candidate, while industrial doctorates can receive up to 30,000 euros.

Kumbaro said the programme now brings both categories under one national call, rather than separate calls with different rules. Category A covers standard research doctorates, while Category B supports industrial doctorates. Both follow the same administrative, financial, monitoring and transparency standards.
The scheme gives priority to innovation and science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It aims to develop researchers capable of conducting independent research and producing results that benefit science, the economy and public policy.

Tirana State University Rector Artan Hoxha welcomed the increase in funding. He said recent policies had placed greater emphasis on scientific research, particularly financial support for doctoral candidates.
