Albania joins regional deal to protect transport infrastructure from climate change

TIRANA, June 8 – Albania joined a regional cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening the resilience of transport infrastructure against climate change during a meeting of Western Balkan transport authorities in Helsinki, Finland.

The agreement was signed by Ergys Verdho, head of Albanian Railways. It brings together road and rail authorities from across the region.

The deal shifts focus from repairing climate-related damage to preventing it and improving long-term resilience. Meanwhile, participants noted that extreme weather events are increasingly challenging transport networks across the region.

Data presented at the meeting showed that around 50% of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) road system and one-third of the rail network face risks from floods, high temperatures and landslides.

In addition, participants agreed on concrete steps to identify risks, improve planning and invest in more resilient infrastructure. The aim is to reduce damage and ensure uninterrupted transport operations.

They also stressed that climate challenges require coordinated responses among institutions, transport operators and international partners. As a result, they said infrastructure must be better prepared for future extreme events.

Finally, participants underlined that preventive investment and climate adaptation are more cost-effective than post-disaster repairs.
