TIRANA, July 8 – Albania has started the process of reforming its hydrometeorological service to modernize the sector and strengthen its capacity to address climate change, public safety and sustainable development challenges.
Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj held the first meeting today with the inter-institutional working group established for the reform. The group includes representatives from the Institute of Geosciences, the Military Meteorological Service, the National Civil Protection Agency, other state institutions, and Albania’s partners from ALBAdapt and MeteoSwiss.
Jaupaj said the group will focus on drafting a new legal and institutional framework for the hydrometeorological service. The goal is to create a modern, reliable and sustainable system.
Meanwhile, the minister explained that the reform aims to ensure access to high-quality hydrometeorological and climate data. These data will support civil protection, agriculture, energy, water management, transport, tourism and other key sectors of the economy.
A strengthened hydrometeorological service will also improve early warning systems and help institutions manage natural risks more effectively. In addition, it will support policies that help Albania adapt to climate change.
The process will also align Albania’s system with European standards and the requirements of the country’s integration into the European Union.
