Albania plans Porto Romano port in Durrës with capacity of up to one million containers, minister says

TIRANA, April 16 – Albania plans to build a new commercial port in Porto Romano with a capacity of up to one million containers, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Enea Karakaçi told parliament. He described the project as a strategic investment for the country’s logistics sector.

Karakaçi said the current Port of Durrës limits development due to its multiple functions. He added that the new port aims to expand logistics capacity and strengthen Albania’s regional role. The project relies on an international masterplan and targets modern technical and environmental standards.

According to the minister, the first phase will handle about 600,000 containers annually. Capacity will later increase to one million containers. The port will connect Albania with Kosova, North Macedonia, and Montenegro through road and rail links, including Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII.

The project also includes warehouses, distribution centres, and value-added services. Authorities plan to integrate a military facility in line with North Atlantic Treaty Organization requirements. Karakaçi said five international companies joined the latest tender, while one bidder withdrew over cost differences.
