Albania Produced 7.5 Million Megawatt-Hours of Energy in 2025 – How Much Was Lost in the Grid

Albania produced 7.5 million megawatt-hours of electricity during 2025, of which 1.3 million megawatt-hours were lost in the distribution network. This represents a loss level of around 17%, showing a downward trend compared to previous years.

Electricity losses, caused by theft or network depreciation, were significantly reduced last year. Data from the Regulatory Authority show that the loss level stood at 17%, compared to 17.9% the previous year. The nearly 1% decrease translates into higher revenues for the energy system, as a result of investments in the transmission network.

In absolute terms, 1.3 million megawatt-hours out of the 7.5 million produced did not reach consumers. If these losses had been consumed, based on the average electricity price of last year, the economic damage would have reached approximately €65 million.

According to the government program for 2025–2029, the goal is to reduce distribution losses to below 12% within four years. This target is expected to be achieved through the use of new metering technologies.

High losses in the electricity network directly affect the bills of public energy companies. Reducing them would improve financial balances, increase investments, and support policies aimed at lowering electricity prices for consumers.
