Albania pushes cash reduction as businesses face 30 May POS terminal deadline

TIRANA, April 24 – Businesses in Albania have 37 days left to meet legal requirements for cashless payments through POS terminals in selected sectors.

The obligation applies to accommodation services, transport operators, and public institutions. The deadline for tourism and transport businesses is set for 30 May 2026.

Separate provisions extend the requirement to all other businesses until 31 December 2026. Authorities introduced the phased approach under amendments to the tax procedures law.

The changes aim to reduce cash circulation, formalise economic activity, and improve transaction transparency. The legislation also lowers the cash payment ceiling between businesses from 150,000 to 100,000 Lek and sets a 500,000 Lek limit for cash transactions involving individuals and self-employed entities.

Tax authorities said compliance will improve service speed and increase traceability of payments. They warned that non-compliant taxpayers face penalties under current law.
