Albania ranks first in the Western Balkans in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced today.

In a video message, Rama said the global index places Albania 46th among 177 countries. He added that the country has achieved the biggest environmental progress in the region over the past decade. Moreover, he said Albania ranks 21st worldwide for climate change mitigation.

“These are not assessments we have made ourselves. International and academic institutions have reached these conclusions after measuring environmental performance for 25 years with the same global methodology,” Rama said.

Meanwhile, Rama also commented on recent environmental protests. He described them as a sign of a more active and aware society.

“Despite any exaggeration, manipulation, or political use linked to these protests, the fact that so many people care about flamingos, lagoons, forests, and biodiversity shows that Albanian society has changed,” he said.

The Prime Minister highlighted Albania’s transformation over the years. He recalled a past marked by illegal deforestation, uncontrolled hunting, and polluted rivers.

“Today, we are a completely different country in this area as well,” Rama said.

Furthermore, he said environmental debates show the progress of society.

“A society that discusses nature protection stands far ahead of one that silently accepts its destruction,” Rama added.

However, Rama stressed that the ranking does not mean Albania has solved every environmental challenge.

“We have made mistakes, we still have much to learn, and we have more work ahead,” he said.

According to Rama, the report should not serve as a reason for self-satisfaction. Instead, it should encourage stronger action and greater responsibility.

He concluded that Albania’s European path requires a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.

“Albania cannot choose between the economy and the environment. We must move forward with both, guided by facts and responsibility,” Rama said.
