Albania Remembers Historian and Academic Aleks Buda on the Anniversary of His Passing

Albania honors the memory of Aleks Buda, one of the country’s most influential historians and scholars, on the anniversary of his passing on July 7, 1993.

Buda left a rich intellectual legacy and established himself as a leading figure in Albanian historiography and academic life.

As the first president of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, founded in 1972, he organized and advanced scientific research across the country. Moreover, he contributed to a wide range of disciplines, including history, linguistics, archaeology, ethnography, and medieval art.

Born in 1911 in Elbasan, Buda grew up in a patriotic family. His father, Dhimitër Buda, participated in the Congress of Monastir and helped finance the Normal School of Elbasan.

Buda completed his primary education in Lecce, attended secondary school in Salzburg, and earned a degree from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Vienna.

He taught at high schools in Tirana and Korça from 1939 to 1943. During that period, he joined the anti-fascist resistance movement and later served as deputy chairman of the National Liberation Council for the Elbasan region.

In 1945, Buda took charge of the National Library of Albania and helped organize its collections. He later established the history and sociology sector at the Institute of Sciences and supported the development of archaeology, ancient history, medieval studies, ethnography, and medieval art research.

Furthermore, he laid the foundations of Albanian medieval studies after the creation of the Institute of History and Linguistics in 1955, giving the field a strong scientific framework.

With the establishment of the University of Tirana, Buda helped create the Department of Albanian History and played a key role in training future historians. As a result, he educated generations of researchers, particularly in the field of medieval history.

Consequently, Aleks Buda continues to inspire scholars and remains one of the architects of modern historical research in Albania.
