Albania supports Italy on illegal migration challenges

TIRANA, May 20 – Interior Minister Besfort Lamallari said Albania continues to support Italy in challenges linked to illegal migration and regional security.
During a press conference, Lamallari answered questions about contacts with Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and the latter’s visit to Tirana. He confirmed that Albanian and Italian authorities have not discussed turning the Gjadër camp from a repatriation centre into a shelter facility.

Instead, Lamallari said talks focused on strategic cooperation in security and migration. He noted that both sides discussed the fight against organised crime, trafficking, drug smuggling, and illegal migration.

Meanwhile, the minister said Albania remains committed to supporting Italy on migration challenges. He added that the Albanian government has taken a clear position on the issue.

Lamallari also recalled Italy’s support for Albania over the years, especially in efforts against cannabis cultivation. He said the partnership between the two countries remains mutual and strategic.

In addition, the minister described the cooperation as important for bilateral relations, regional security, and the security of the European Union. He added that Albania has evolved from a country that once imported solutions from partners into a contributor to regional security, strengthening its credibility in European Union accession negotiations.
