Albania women reach 2027 World Cup play-offs after 5-2 win over Montenegro

TIRANA, June 10 – Albania’s women’s national team beat Montenegro 5-2 at the “Loro Boriçi” stadium and secured a place in the first round of the 2027 World Cup play-offs in Brazil.

Albania started strongly and pushed forward from the opening minutes. Fortesa Berisha hit the crossbar in the 4th minute. However, Montenegro took the lead in the 20th minute. Albania responded immediately. Megi Doçi won a penalty and the Montenegrin goalkeeper received a red card. Doçi converted the spot kick in the 22nd minute to level the score at 1-1. Montenegro regained the lead before half-time. Meanwhile, Berisha restored parity before the break. She finished a move involving Doçi and Klea Hamonikaj to make it 2-2.

In the second half, Albania took control of the match. Doçi scored from distance in the 63rd minute to put her side ahead. Four minutes later, Gresa Berisha added the fourth goal after an assist from Ezmiralda Franja. Arbiona Bajraktari completed the scoring in the 70th minute from another Franja assist for a 5-2 victory.

As a result, Albania secured qualification for the 2027 World Cup play-offs. The team also retained its place in League B. In addition, Albania collected a record seven points in a League B group.
