TIRANA, May 13 – The parliamentary Committee for Culture, Tourism and Diaspora of Albania and the Committee for Natural Resources, Infrastructure and Sustainable Development of Albania held a joint meeting in Struga, North Macedonia, on May 12–13. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe supported the event.
Lawmakers from Albania and North Macedonia attended the meeting. Diplomatic representatives joined them. Senior officials from Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe missions in both countries also took part.
Turning to the agenda, participants focused on environmental and climate challenges in the region. They described climate change as a major threat to ecosystems, economies and public wellbeing.
Head of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Mission in Skopje Kilian Wahl said shared environmental challenges require coordinated responses. He also stressed continued regional cooperation.
In addition, Wahl highlighted dialogue and exchange of experience between countries. He pointed to Lakes Ohrid and Prespa and surrounding mountain ecosystems as shared regional assets.
Meanwhile, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Co-ordinator of Economic and Environmental Activities Bakyt Dzhusupov said climate action requires broader engagement from lawmakers, academics and civil society. He linked this engagement to sustainable development goals.
Head of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Presence in Tirana Michel Tarran said the meeting comes at an important moment for regional climate cooperation. He stressed the role of parliaments in legislation, cross-border cooperation and local community involvement.
Chair of the Albanian Committee for Natural Resources, Infrastructure and Sustainable Development Anila Denaj highlighted dialogue with all stakeholders. She also underlined the responsibility of lawmakers in implementing environmental legislation.
Chair of the Albanian Committee for Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Ina Zhupa said cooperation between Albania and North Macedonia remains essential. She also called for stronger public awareness of climate challenges.
Experts and institutional representatives contributed to the discussions. They shared experience on climate security and natural resource management.
Overall, participants reiterated the need for stronger regional cooperation. They also supported joint environmental priorities and sustainable development.
