TIRANA, June 3 – Members of Albania’s Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs and Defence, Agron Malaj and Bujar Rexha, took part in the annual meeting of parliamentary security and defence committees from Southeast European countries in Zagreb, Croatia.
The Croatian Parliament organised the event with RACVIAC (Centre for Security Cooperation), DCAF (Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The meeting brought together lawmakers, security experts and institutional representatives from across the region.
Participants reviewed recent developments in the security environment in Southeast Europe. They also discussed wider security trends beyond the region. In addition, delegates examined challenges linked to regional stability. Discussions also covered hybrid threats and cybersecurity.
Meanwhile, participants highlighted the need for stronger regional cooperation. They focused on joint responses to shared security challenges.
Another session examined the role of parliaments in overseeing the security and defence sector. Participants reviewed parliamentary scrutiny mechanisms. They also discussed ways to increase transparency. In addition, they explored measures to strengthen institutional accountability.
The forum provided an opportunity to exchange experience and parliamentary best practices. As a result, delegates strengthened inter-parliamentary cooperation on security and defence issues.
