Albania’s National History Museum Must Be Protected, Not Attacked, Director Says

Albania’s National History The National Historical Museum, one of Albania’s most important institutions preserving the country’s history and national identity, must be protected rather than attacked, its director, Elenita Roshi, has urged.

Speaking to the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATSH) on October 16, Roshi stressed the museum’s importance following several attempts by protesters to target the building.

She said the museum preserves memories of both difficult periods and moments of national pride. Through its collections, documents and historical exhibits, the institution tells the story of the events and figures that have shaped Albanian identity over the centuries.

Roshi also stressed that protecting and preserving the museum means safeguarding the country’s collective memory and passing its historical and cultural heritage on to future generations.

“Just as we have the right to hope and fight for a better Albania, we must also remember that our ancestors placed their hopes in a history that must be expressed, understood and read somewhere — precisely in this building, which must be preserved,” Roshi said.

Beyond its role as an exhibition space, the museum helps visitors understand Albania’s historical development and the events that shaped the nation. Its collections serve as a link between the country’s past, present and future.

The museum is approaching the 45th anniversary of its inauguration, which took place on October 28, 1981. As the anniversary approaches, Roshi’s appeal highlights the importance of protecting the institution as a key part of Albania’s cultural heritage and national identity.
