ALL 1.5 Trillion in Bank Savings, Deposits Over Two Years Preferred

The total stock of savings in the banking system reached around ALL 1.5 trillion at the end of July 2026. A report published by the Bank of Albania shows a strong increase in savings, driven mainly by the expansion of savings in the local currency. Lek-denominated deposits held by individuals, businesses and other institutions reached ALL 737 billion in the first month of the year, an increase of ALL 26 billion, or 4%, compared with July 2025.

The data show that Albanians prefer to keep their money mainly in long-term bank deposits, with most choosing maturities of more than two years.

Keeping savings in a bank for a long period is often considered a safer investment, especially by those who intend to use the money further in the future, whether for their children, medical needs, purchasing a home, starting a business or other purposes. Long-term deposits also offer higher interest rates. The longer the deposit term and the greater the amount of savings, the higher the interest earnings will be after several years.

According to official statistics, lek-denominated deposits with maturities of more than two years held by individuals amount to ALL 174.7 billion, followed by one-year deposits at ALL 127 billion.
