Ambassador Bergner: Germany supports Albania’s EU integration process and rule-of-law standards

TIRANA, July 6 – German Ambassador to Albania, Karl Bergner, said on Monday that Germany supports Albania’s path toward European Union integration. He underlined the importance of shared European values during remarks on the country’s reform process.

Bergner said Albania’s citizens broadly align with EU principles. He stressed support for the technical side of integration. He also highlighted respect for those who uphold European values in daily life. In addition, he pointed to citizens who defend the rule of law and environmental protection as key actors in the integration process.

He also called for reflection on the past. He said societies should remember and honour victims. He added that lessons from history should guide future progress.

Earlier, Bergner addressed ongoing protests in Tirana. He said civil society activity that aligns with EU values is welcome. However, he noted that violent protests do not align with European standards.

He said responsibility for violence remains under discussion. He added that peaceful protests are part of democratic expression. He also said they support EU values when conducted within legal frameworks.
