Archaeological research resumes at Paleolithic settlement in Gajtan near Shkodër

Archaeological research has resumed for a second consecutive year in Gajtan village, east of Shkodër, near the Gajtan Cave. The work forms part of the Gajtan Paleolithic Archaeological Research in Albania project.

Archaeologist Rudens Ruka leads the project, which brings together Albania’s Institute of Archaeology and several French research institutions. The site is separate from the nearby Qyteza e Gajtanit, an Iron Age Illyrian fortification located on a hill northeast of the village.

Meanwhile, researchers have focused on the central sector of the cave, including its upper and collapsed sections. This area marks the point where archaeologist Anton Fistani stopped excavations in the 1980s. The team is removing deposits layer by layer to recover microfauna and other environmental indicators.

The project aims to raise interest in Paleolithic archaeology in Albania through fieldwork and research activities. The current campaign will also help researchers assess the area’s Paleolithic potential and identify priority sites for archaeological research in 2027.
