On June 17, 1928, the artistic society Lira Artistic Society was founded in Korçë. It emerged as one of the most influential cultural associations of its time.
The society operated under the dedicated leadership of Sotir Kozmo and the conducting of Arbëresh maestro Paskal Anibal. It energized cultural life from Korçë to Tirana.
After its creation, the Korçë city choir joined the new organization. The choir had already been active before the society was formed. As a result, “Lira” significantly contributed to the development of patriotic music across Albania, especially after the country’s liberation from centuries of Ottoman rule.
Musicians such as Luigj Filaj, Ilo Mosko, Vasillaq Ballauri, Nikolla Hançe, and Isuf Ibrahimi helped shape its musical identity. In addition, students educated abroad brought a European artistic influence that enriched Albanian urban music.
Furthermore, “Lira” formed a bridge between folk tradition and European classical works. It combined the talents of local artists with the experience of French educators from the Korçë Lyceum.
As a result, the society became both an artistic and patriotic center. It educated generations of artists and left a lasting impact on Albanian national culture.
