Aubrey Herbert, British colonel and friend of Albania and Albanians

TIRANA, April 3 – Aubrey Herbert, a British politician, diplomat, and writer, was born in London on 3 April 1880.

He became one of the most notable figures in Anglo-Albanian friendship. His travels across Albanian lands from 1904 to 1917 created a deep spiritual bond with the Albanian people and gave him strong knowledge of the Albanian language.

During a period of existential crises for the Albanian nation, he emerged as a tireless defender of Albania’s independence and territorial integrity.

Together with Edith Durham, Herbert founded the Anglo-Albanian Committee in London, building a bridge between Albania and European chancelleries. His role as an “honorary delegate” of the Vatra [Hearth] Federation of Boston Mass. and his interventions at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 highlight his diplomatic influence in protecting Albania’s borders.

His literary and documentary legacy, including the work Ben Kendim (“Myself”, London 1924), remains a valuable record of Albanian values.

Herbert passed away on 26 September 1923. The Albanian state has repeatedly expressed gratitude, awarding him high national honors for his service and dedication.
