Book “100 Years of Theatre in Shkodra (1879–1979)” highlights a century of Albanian stage history

The book “100 Years of Theatre in Shkodra: 1879–1979” by author Andrea Skanjeti has been published by the Academy of Sciences of Albania, presenting a century-long history of theatre in Shkodra, one of the country’s most important cultural centres.

Academic and playwright Stefan Çapaliku contributed to preparing the book for publication.

Skanjeti’s work features numerous renowned actors and directors from Shkodra who helped shape the city’s theatrical tradition. The book also includes scenes from famous performances and important cultural events that marked the development of theatre in the city.

Shkodra’s theatrical history dates back to the late 19th century. As a major cultural and educational centre, the city became the birthplace of some of the first theatre performances in Albania, supported by local enthusiasts and intellectuals who promoted art and culture during the Ottoman period.

The Academy of Sciences described the publication as an important reference for researchers and anyone interested in Albanian art and cultural history.

The book preserves memories, experiences and events that contributed to shaping the cultural identity of Shkodra and Albania.
