Brussels meeting: FM Hoxha says EU enlargement is a strategic choice for peace and stability

TIRANA, May 11 – Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha took part in an informal meeting between EU foreign ministers and counterparts from the Western Balkans, held at the invitation of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

At the meeting, Hoxha said Albania considers EU enlargement a strategic choice and the strongest guarantee for long-term peace, stability, and democratic transformation. He also said the process remains important for the European Union itself, describing it as merit-based, credible, and tangible.

Meanwhile, he stressed Albania’s continued commitment to regional cooperation, saying no sustainable alternative exists outside it. He also underlined that global geopolitical challenges require unity of purpose and action, as traditional security frameworks face growing pressure.

In addition, Hoxha said alignment with the European Union is a full commitment for Albania. He stated that the country follows a “100%” approach to integration. He also referred to the Western Balkans, saying the region must address open issues and strengthen cooperation to ensure long-term stability.

Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of responding to cyber and hybrid threats, noting Albania’s experience in strengthening institutional resilience. According to him, these threats become more sophisticated as countries move closer to the European Union, which makes cooperation essential.

Finally, Hoxha reaffirmed Albania’s strategic objective of European Union membership and said the country remains committed to contributing to the success of the process for Albania, the region, and Europe.
