TIRANA, April 1 – Ahead of its revival at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet (TKOB), Albanian news agency, ATSH recalls one of the first performances of Cavalleria Rusticana in the capital with a historic photo gallery.
The photographs date back to 1958, showing the opera’s protagonists and chorus. The premiere took place on 5 March 1958, conducted by Mustafa Krantja with direction by Kristaq Antoniu. Leading roles featured Dhimitra Keta, Gjoni Athanas, Ibrahim Tukiçi, Jorgjia Velo, and Tefta Çavo.
Cavalleria Rusticana is one of the most powerful works in the classical repertoire. Set in a small Sicilian village, it tells the story of Turiddu, Santuzza, and Lola, a love triangle fueled by passion, jealousy, and pride. The opera unfolds in a single act, building constant tension that ends in unavoidable tragedy and revenge.
The production will return to Tirana audiences on 3, 4, 6, and 7 April, coinciding with the Easter period, mirroring the seasonal backdrop of Pietro Mascagni’s original composition.
