Albanian patriot and activist of the National Renaissance Çerçiz Topulli was born in Gjirokastra on September 20, 1880.
The family environment in which he grew up, particularly the example of his older brother, Bajo Topulli, played an important role in shaping his patriotic ideals.
In 1907, Çerçiz Topulli took command of an armed group operating in southern Albania. He soon became one of the prominent figures of the armed movement. He helped organize armed resistance against the occupying forces and spread the ideas of the national movement among Albanians.
One of the most important events of this period was the Battle of Mashkullora on March 18, 1908. The battle made Topulli’s name known across the country.
Following the Young Turk Revolution in 1908, Topulli became involved in establishing Albanian national clubs. He also supported efforts to open Albanian-language schools in different parts of the country.
After Albania declared independence on November 28, 1912, Topulli served the Provisional Government of Vlora. He also took part in efforts to defend the country’s territorial integrity.
His life came to an end in July 1915, when Montenegrin forces killed him in an ambush at Fusha e Shtoit in Shkodra.
In 1937, Çerçiz Topulli’s remains were brought to Gjirokastra, where they were reburied with honors.
