Colorful Mosaics Discovered Near Early Christian Basilica in Elbasan

Archaeologists uncover new mosaics during excavations in Elbasan.

First, the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences carries out excavations under the project “Roman-Byzantine Quarter Outside the Walls of Castrum Scampis – Extra Muros Early Christian Basilica.”

They discover previously unknown mosaics near the early Christian basilica outside the ancient city walls of Scampis. The team works in the area located in front of the main gate of Elbasan Castle.

In addition, archaeologists find a well-preserved polychrome mosaic. It shows a Eucharist scene in vivid detail. Furthermore, they uncover an inscription that names two donors, including a deaconess called Euridyce.

Next, the National Council of Cultural Heritage approves the project. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Municipality of Elbasan prepare plans to restore the site.

Finally, they plan to protect the mosaics and open the area to visitors as a cultural and tourist destination.
