Albania’s Competition Authority has launched a market monitoring process focused on the retail sale of essential grocery products, following complaints from citizens and concerns raised by members of parliament over the prices of everyday consumer goods.
According to an official statement, the monitoring will cover the country’s main supermarket chains and aims to provide a comprehensive overview of developments in the retail grocery market. The analysis will be based on sales data, consumption patterns and price trends for the period from January 1, 2025, to June 2026.
As part of the process, the Competition Authority has requested retailers to submit detailed information on their total sales for 2025 and the January–June 2026 period, as well as a list of the 30 best-selling products by sales volume. These products will be subject to a comparative analysis to assess market behaviour and price developments.
The Authority said the monitoring aims to evaluate competition in a market segment that is particularly important for household budgets, identify market trends and detect any issues that may require intervention under Albania’s competition protection legislation.
The Competition Authority said it remains committed to ensuring open, competitive and transparent markets in order to safeguard the public interest and consumer welfare.
