Czech Republic reaffirms support for Albania’s EU membership bid

Albania is seeking stronger parliamentary ties with the Czech Republic as it advances towards European Union membership.

During an official visit to Prague, Speaker of the Albanian Parliament Niko Peleshi met with Tomio Okamura, Speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, and Miloš Vystrčil, President of the Czech Senate.

The meetings focused on bilateral relations and opportunities to expand cooperation. Both sides highlighted their traditional friendship, ongoing political dialogue and shared European values.

Peleshi thanked the Czech Republic for its consistent support for Albania’s EU membership and its backing for a merit-based enlargement process.

He stressed that political support from EU member states remains particularly important at this decisive stage of Albania’s accession negotiations. Meanwhile, Albania continues to implement reforms and work towards its strategic goal of EU membership.

The two sides also discussed the European future of the Western Balkans and the role of the Visegrad Group in supporting regional integration.

Furthermore, Peleshi called for closer contacts between the two parliaments, including parliamentary committees and friendship groups. He welcomed the revival of the Czech-Albanian Friendship Group in the Czech Chamber of Deputies and encouraged more exchanges between committees dealing with European affairs and foreign policy.

The discussions also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in the economy, tourism and education, as well as the exchange of institutional experience and best practices.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to closer dialogue and parliamentary cooperation. They also stressed that a more integrated and cooperative Western Balkans would contribute to peace, stability and a stronger, more united Europe.
