TIRANA, August 3 – This week could bring progress in talks on forming Kosova’s new institutions. The discussions involve the Self-Determination Movement (Vetëvendosje), which won the June 7 elections, and the opposition Democratic League of Kosova (LDK).
Meanwhile, caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti said he expects results from talks with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku. He also urged political parties to prepare for the Assembly session on August 6. Lawmakers will again try to constitute the legislature. They must first elect the speaker and five deputy speakers.
Self-Determination holds 53 seats in parliament. The party can secure the Assembly leadership with support from non-Albanian community parties. However, Kurti still needs an agreement with the LDK, which won 18 seats. Such an agreement would allow lawmakers to elect the country’s next president. It would also help end the political and institutional deadlock that has continued since last year.
In addition, lawmakers need 61 votes to elect the Assembly speaker and approve a new government. They need a two-thirds majority to elect the president. At least 80 lawmakers must attend the session before they can hold the presidential vote.
