TIRANA, May 14 – Defence Minister Ermal Nufi met today in Tirana with Admiral George M. Wikoff, Commander of NATO’s Joint Force Command Naples, during an official visit to Albania.
Opening the talks, Nufi underlined that the visit reflects the strong partnership between the Albanian Armed Forces and NATO Allies, reaffirming Albania’s commitment to collective defence and shared democratic values.
Turning to broader security cooperation, the minister highlighted the role of NATO’s Naples Command in safeguarding Euro-Atlantic stability. He noted that Albania is continuing the modernisation of its armed forces while fully meeting its obligations as a NATO member state.
Against the backdrop of regional developments, the two sides discussed recent geopolitical tensions in Southeast Europe. They agreed that the region remains exposed to disinformation, hybrid threats and cyber risks, stressing the need for sustained coordination among Allies.
The conversation also addressed the security situation in Kosovo and the role of NATO’s KFOR mission. Nufi praised NATO’s presence on the ground, particularly in northern Kosovo, as a key factor in maintaining stability and security.
In addition, he reaffirmed Albania’s continued contribution to KFOR and EUFOR Althea missions. He said Albania will further strengthen its military capabilities, including air assets and protection against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
NATO’s Joint Force Command Naples is one of the Alliance’s three operational-level commands. It is responsible for planning and conducting military operations, supporting crisis management and ensuring readiness across its area of responsibility.
