TIRANA, August 4 – Prolonged drought and high temperatures continue to reduce the water level at the Fierza reservoir, Albania’s largest hydropower lake, as inflows fall sharply.
Water inflows from the rivers feeding the reservoir have dropped to about 80 cubic metres per second. Meanwhile, the lake level has fallen to 286 metres, down from its maximum operating level of 296 metres.
The decline has reduced water reserves at the country’s main hydropower plants. Conditions remain most challenging at the Fierza Hydropower Plant, where electricity generation has also contributed to lower reservoir levels.
Meteorological forecasts show no significant rainfall in the coming weeks, while high temperatures are expected to persist throughout August. As a result, the situation continues to put pressure on Albania’s power system. The Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) is covering part of the country’s electricity demand through purchases on international energy markets.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged households and businesses to use electricity responsibly. They said reducing unnecessary consumption will help ease pressure on the energy system and support a stable power supply during the dry period.
