Dushaj, the Picturesque Village of Stone Towers Above Fushë-Bulqizë

Dushaj stands above Fushë-Bulqizë with stone towers, green valleys, waterfalls, and mountain landscapes. The village has become a growing destination for visitors seeking nature, history, and authentic Albanian hospitality.

At the entrance of the village, the historic Kulla Hupi welcomes tourists preparing for the new tourism season. Workers continue restoration works on the more than 200-year-old tower house, which now operates as an agritourism guesthouse.

Tourists use the tower as a starting point for hikes toward White Mountain, known locally as Maja e Arithit. The area offers forests, flower-filled meadows, streams, and fresh mountain air.

A newly paved road now connects the village with nearby areas and has increased the number of visitors. Local residents say the improved infrastructure has opened new opportunities for tourism and economic growth.

One of the village’s most unique landmarks is the small stone mosque, Mustafa Ahmed el Merzuk Mosque. The mosque features carved stone walls and a rare short circular minaret covered in stone.

Dushaj also preserves traces of its long history. Historians link the area to the medieval Principality of Arber, while official documents first recorded the village in 1838. The village later became known for its stone towers and its contribution to Albania’s national movements.

During the communist period, many villagers worked in the Bulqizë chrome mines. Today, locals focus on agriculture, livestock, and tourism development. The area is also part of Albania’s “Mountains Package” program for mountain economy development.

Visitors at Kulla Hupi experience traditional Albanian food and daily village life. Local host Lulzim Hupi said bookings remain full from June to September as more tourists discover the village.

Located about 40 minutes from Tirana through the Road of Arber, Dushaj continues to grow as a new mountain tourism destination in Albania.
