Energy security a top priority, Karakaçi says after agreement with US and Greece

TIRANA, April 28 – Infrastructure and Energy Minister Enea Karakaçi said energy security is a key state priority. He described it as a core element of economic stability and national resilience. He spoke at a meeting in Tirana where Albania signed an agreement with the United States and Greece on energy security.

At the same time, Karakaçi said Albania is taking steps to reduce exposure to hydropower-related risks. He added that the government is building a more sustainable energy system. In addition, he said reforms and strategic projects are advancing to diversify energy sources and strengthen supply security.

Meanwhile, he stressed that the strategic partnership with the United States plays a central role. He said this cooperation supports long-term efforts for a secure and sustainable energy future.

One of the main projects is the Vlora Energy Hub. It is expected to strengthen Albania’s position in the regional energy market. The project includes an increase of about 250 megawatts in generation capacity. It also includes upgrades to energy storage infrastructure and new links with the regional gas transmission network.

In addition, plans include transforming the existing thermal power plant into the Vlora Energy Hub. Authorities will also build the Fier–Vlora pipeline to connect the facility with the national and regional gas network. Karakaçi said the project will define Albania’s role in the regional energy map.

At the same time, he said these measures will increase production capacity and support diversification. He added that they will strengthen the country’s energy position.

He said the Vlora Energy Hub will position Albania as a strategic energy gateway in the Balkans. It will link natural gas imports with regional markets and create diversified supply routes. As a result, he said energy security will improve through stable supply.

Karakaçi said cooperation with the United States on liquefied natural gas is essential. He added that the project requires careful implementation and high standards. The aim is to turn Albania into a net energy exporter.

Finally, he highlighted regional cooperation, including coordination with neighbouring Greece. He said this step will strengthen energy independence and diversify supply sources.
