Ernest Koliqi, founder of the modern Albanian novella

TIRANA, May 20 – On May 20, 1903, Ernest Koliqi was born in the city of Shkodër. He became one of the most influential Albanian writers, scholars, translators, and educators of the 20th century.

Koliqi studied at the Saverian College and later graduated in literature from the University of Padua. He combined Albanian literary tradition with modern European thought and introduced a new approach to Albanian prose and literary criticism. Critics consider him the founder of the modern Albanian novella through works such as ‘Hija e Maleve’ (Shadow of the Mountains) and ‘Tregtar Flamujsh’ (Flag Merchant), which brought a new narrative and psychological style to Albanian literature.

Beyond literature, Koliqi also played an important role in education and culture. As education minister from 1939 to 1941, he supported the opening of Albanian-language schools in Kosova and Macedonia. In addition, he promoted Albanian language and culture through publications and the literary-cultural magazine ‘Shkëndija’ (The Spark).

Through the folklore collection Visaret e Kombit (Treasures of the Nation) and his work at the Albanian language chair at Sapienza University of Rome, Koliqi helped preserve and promote Albanian cultural heritage in the diaspora and internationally.

Ernest Koliqi died on January 15, 1975.
