The 22nd meeting of the EU-Albania Parliamentary Stabilisation and Association Committee begins in Tirana today. The two-day meeting will continue on Tuesday, September 22. The meeting will start at 10:00. Taulant Balla, head of the Assembly of Albania delegation, and European Parliament delegation head Marco Tarquinio will co-chair the meeting. Assembly Speaker Niko Peleshi will also address the participants. European Parliament members Chiara Gemma and Cristian Terheș will attend the meeting. Gemma serves as vice-chair of the EU-Albania committee delegation.
Meanwhile, the meeting forms part of parliamentary cooperation between Albania and the European Union. It follows the committee’s 21st meeting in Strasbourg on July 8-9. The agenda covers Albania’s EU integration, the rule of law, fundamental rights, organized crime and corruption, media freedom, sustainable development and regional cooperation.
The meeting is also expected to focus on accession negotiations. The European Conservatives and Reformists group said Albania has opened all six negotiating clusters. It also described Albania as an important partner for regional security and stability. The group stressed effective reforms, stronger rule of law, implementation of adopted legislation and reduced political polarization. It linked further progress in the accession process to the quality and implementation of reforms.
The committee meets twice a year. One meeting takes place in Albania and the other at the European Parliament in Brussels or Strasbourg. The 22nd meeting takes place on September 21 and 22 in Tirana.
