EU Appoints Sofia Moreira de Sousa as New Ambassador to Albania

The European Union has appointed Sofia Moreira de Sousa as its new ambassador to Albania. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, announced the appointment as part of the EU’s 2026 diplomatic rotation.

Currently, Moreira de Sousa leads the European Commission Representation in Portugal. Previously, she served as the EU Ambassador to Cape Verde and held several senior positions within European institutions.

According to the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU’s 145 delegations represent the bloc’s diplomatic presence worldwide. They play a key role in protecting EU interests and promoting its foreign and security policies.

The new ambassador appointments will become official after the host countries grant formal approval. The process will also require the completion of administrative procedures under the 2026 diplomatic rotation.

Meanwhile, Kallas also announced the appointment of two new senior officials at the EEAS headquarters in Brussels.
