EU Approves Landmark Returns Regulation Inspired by Italy-Albania Model, Meloni Says

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has described the European Parliament’s approval of the new European Union regulation on the return of migrants without legal residence status as a “major success.”

In a video shared on social media from Evian, where she is attending the G7 Summit, Meloni said the new regulation is the result of the Italian government’s efforts and will enable the faster return of individuals who do not have the right to remain in the European Union.

According to Meloni, the regulation also provides for the possibility of establishing return centers in third countries, following the path opened by the agreement between Italy and Albania on migrant management.

She said the solution, which she claimed had been opposed by both the Italian and European left, has now become a tool available to the entire European Union.

“Today, Italy has achieved a major success in Europe. The European Parliament has approved the new European regulation on returns. It is a historic measure, largely the result of the work carried out by the Italian government, which allows us to quickly return those who do not have the right to remain in the European Union.

The regulation provides, among other things, for the possibility of opening return centers in third countries. This is, de facto, the path opened by the Italian government through the protocol with Albania.

It is an innovative solution that the Italian and European left tried to oppose in every possible way, but thanks to this government it has now become a tool available to all of Europe.

Protecting borders, drastically reducing arrivals, fighting human traffickers, and immediately returning those who do not have the right to stay in our countries. We promised Italians that we would change Europe, and we have done so with courage, patience, and determination, because our compass is clear: to fully implement the program endorsed by citizens. We will not stop; we will continue moving forward in this direction,” Meloni said in the video shared on social media.
