European Union Deputy Ambassador to Albania Andre Rico reaffirmed the bloc’s support for strengthening the country’s cybersecurity framework. Speaking at the 2026 National Cybersecurity Conference, he described cyber protection as essential to national security, economic security and stability.
Rico warned that cyber threats against the European Union and its member states had increased. He cited attacks by state and non-state actors targeting critical infrastructure and networks. He also confirmed continued EU support for Albania’s National Cybersecurity Authority and joint efforts to counter digital threats.
Turning to European integration, Rico described the current period as crucial for relations between the European Union and Albania. He said accession negotiations had entered a critical phase and noted progress in closing key chapters.
The European Commission is due to adopt its enlargement package on November 4. Rico said the package would assess reform progress in each candidate country, including Albania. He added that the European Union was working with Albania to provide expertise and tools to strengthen its cybersecurity legislation.
