European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that Albania has recently made significant progress on its path toward European Union membership.
According to Kos, Albania met the Interim Benchmarks Assessment Report (IBAR) requirements on the rule of law. As a result, the country can now begin the process of closing negotiating chapters.
However, she stressed that much work still lies ahead.
Furthermore, Kos called on all Western Balkan countries to continue advancing their reform efforts. She noted that a window of opportunity now exists for the region to move closer to EU membership.
Therefore, she encouraged all Western Balkan countries to make full use of this opportunity.
In addition, Kos reaffirmed the European Commission’s commitment to supporting candidate countries. She said the Commission stands ready to move forward with all candidates that deliver reforms and meet their commitments.
At the same time, she emphasized the importance of aligning with the European Union’s common foreign and security policy, as well as its visa policy.
Overall, Kos described Albania’s achievement as an important milestone. Nevertheless, she underlined that continued reforms remain essential for the country’s progress toward full EU membership.
