European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said Albania is on the right track toward European Union membership in an interview with France 24. She included Albania among four countries currently making the most progress in the accession process.
Kos described 2026 as a high-paced year for EU enlargement. She said the EU has opened and provisionally closed more negotiation chapters in the first nine months of 2026 than in any other year over the past 25 years. She named Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine as the four countries making the most progress.
Regarding Albania, the report on the interview said the country has advanced in its accession negotiations and provisionally closed several chapters. The EU held an intergovernmental conference with Albania and the other candidate countries mentioned by Kos in July.
Kos also said EU funding depends on the implementation of reforms. She added that when a country fails to meet the required conditions, the EU may allocate part of its funds to other countries.
