EU Leaders: Albania Next in Line After Montenegro for Membership

Albania received strong support from European Union leaders at the summit in Tivat, Montenegro. EU officials said the country is moving in the right direction toward membership.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU’s goals are clear. She stated that Montenegro is expected to join the EU in 2028, while Albania is expected to follow soon after.

Furthermore, Von der Leyen said the summit showed that the Western Balkans are moving closer to the European Union. She stressed that enlargement is a strategic decision built on cooperation and trust. She also welcomed new ideas that could strengthen and speed up the accession process.

Meanwhile, European Council President António Costa praised Albania’s progress. He said the country has entered the final stage of accession negotiations.

Costa described the summit as successful. In addition, he noted that Montenegro is now counting down to becoming the EU’s 28th member state.

He also highlighted recent progress in Albania’s negotiations. Last week, the EU and Albania held another intergovernmental conference focused on the final phase of talks. As a result, work has begun on closing three negotiating chapters.

Finally, Costa said the EU is considering new ideas to accelerate the enlargement process and increase motivation among candidate countries.
