Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha took part in a high-level meeting of European affairs ministers from the Slavkov format countries and the Western Balkans in Vienna on September 29, 2026.
The Slavkov format brings together Austria, Czechia and Slovakia, along with the Western Balkan countries. Austrian Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Family Claudia Bauer hosted the meeting.
The discussions focused on the progress of the European Union enlargement process and ways to strengthen cooperation with candidate countries.
In his remarks, Hoxha stressed that enlargement should remain a credible, merit-based process that delivers tangible benefits for citizens at every stage.
Speaking about Albania’s priorities, he highlighted the need for clearer and more convincing communication about European integration. He said this should bring the EU closer to citizens and explain the opportunities that the process creates.
Hoxha also placed particular emphasis on young people. He said they should feel part of the European family even before Albania becomes a member.
In this regard, the minister stressed that gradual integration should provide concrete opportunities and benefits before accession. He also called for greater participation by candidate countries in the work of EU institutions. According to Hoxha, this would help prepare them to contribute effectively from the first day of membership.
Addressing today’s strategic challenges, Hoxha said enlargement goes beyond a political choice.
“It is a geopolitical imperative and an essential investment in Europe’s peace, security, stability, competitiveness and resilience,” he said.
Hoxha reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to continuing reforms and advancing toward EU membership through concrete results.
“We will continue to deliver results, advance on the basis of merit and work closely with our partners toward a stronger, more united and more secure Europe,” Hoxha said.
