The EU4Culture program has officially ended in Albania after restoring and revitalizing 23 cultural heritage sites across the country.
The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) implemented the project, which the European Union funded with a total budget of €40 million. The program ran from October 2020 to June 2026 and focused on repairing cultural sites damaged by the November 2019 earthquake.
The initiative also aimed to promote cultural heritage as a driver of sustainable development. As a result, restored sites now support tourism, local economies, and community engagement.
UNOPS coordinated closely with the Albanian Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport throughout the project. Together, they restored key cultural landmarks and improved access to historical spaces.
The program included major restoration works in Tirana, Durrës, Kavaja, and Bashtova. These sites include the Mosaic of the National History Museum, the National Theatre of Puppets, the Central State Film Archive, the “Sotir Kolea” Book Center, the Venetian Tower, and the Hammam of Durrës.
In addition, teams restored the Archaeological Museum of Durrës, the Ethnographic Museum of Durrës, the Bashtova Castle, and the Ethnographic Museum of Kavaja.
Journalists also visited several of these sites during a two-day tour to observe the results of the program.
