TIRANA, June 17 – The European Union, the Albanian government and UNDP held the closing conference of the EU4Schools programme. The initiative repaired and rebuilt 63 educational facilities in 11 municipalities affected by the 2019 earthquake.
Education Minister Mirela Kumbaro thanked all partners who contributed to the programme. She said dedicated teams and strong cooperation made the project possible.
The conference brought together Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu, Minister of State for Local Government Ervin Demo, European Union Ambassador Silvio Gonzato and representatives of the European Union and UNDP.
According to Kumbaro, the programme repaired and rebuilt schools, high schools, vocational schools, nurseries, kindergartens and dormitories in Durrës, Shijak, Tirana, Kamëz, Vora, Kruja, Kurbin, Lezha, Rrogozhina, Mirdita and Kavaja. The investments created modern and safe learning conditions for about 25,000 students.
In addition, the programme added new classrooms and more than 120 science and technology laboratories. Authorities also trained teachers, created psychosocial support spaces and strengthened school safety standards. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education prepared and approved six guidelines on safety in educational facilities.
Kumbaro said the programme delivered more than infrastructure. She noted that EU4Schools restored public confidence, helped communities return to normality and created better opportunities for children.
At the same time, the minister said authorities now apply the programme’s standards to school investments across Albania. She added that 42 new or reconstructed educational facilities will open nationwide with conditions that support learning and after-school programmes.
Kumbaro said the end of EU4Schools marks the start of a new chapter. She added that cooperation between Albania and the European Union will continue to deliver tangible benefits for citizens.
