Euronews: European Union faces decisive moment on enlargement

TIRANA, August 14 – International media network Euronews says the European Union faces a decisive moment over its enlargement policy. The bloc must balance progress by candidate countries with internal reforms needed to operate as a larger and more complex union. Montenegro and Albania rank among the most advanced candidates, while Ukraine and Moldova are also making rapid progress. Iceland is considering a possible return to negotiations through a referendum.

Meanwhile, Euronews says enlargement has gained strategic importance for European security and stability. Montenegro and Albania would have a limited impact on the bloc’s geographical balance, but their progress raises questions about Serbia. Ukraine would have a far greater impact because of its size, population and military capacity. Its possible membership could significantly alter the bloc’s political weight and decision-making mechanisms.

The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, plans to publish a strategic review of enlargement policy on September 30. The review could address decision-making rules, gradual integration of candidate countries and changes to the Commission’s structure. However, national ratification remains a major challenge. Euronews also notes that political shifts in countries such as France and the Netherlands could complicate the process. Montenegro, and potentially Albania, could therefore become the first major test of the European Union’s readiness to admit new members after more than a decade of limited progress.
