European Parliament Calls for the Use of Albanian in State Exams in North Macedonia

The European Parliament has adopted an amendment calling for a resolution to the issue of using the Albanian language in state examinations in North Macedonia, including the Bar Exam.

In the approved text, Members of the European Parliament urge state institutions to address the issue as soon as possible, ensuring the practical implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement not only in legal terms but also in its broader spirit.

The amendment emphasizes that respect for the linguistic rights of Albanians remains a key element in advancing equality and interethnic coexistence in the country.

For this reason, the European Parliament calls on the authorities in Skopje to take concrete steps to ensure that Albanian students have equal opportunities in educational and professional processes.

MEPs also objected to the way protests by Albanian students have been portrayed, calling for them not to be labeled as politically motivated or as a destabilizing factor. According to the Parliament, the students’ demands are linked to the protection of rights guaranteed by law and by the Ohrid Framework Agreement and should therefore be treated with seriousness and institutional responsibility.

The development comes after representatives of the protesting students held meetings in recent days with representatives of the European Parliament. During those meetings, the students raised concerns over being denied the possibility of taking the Bar Exam in Albanian, describing the situation as a violation of their constitutional and legal rights.

The students have called for equal treatment and full respect for their linguistic rights, stressing that the use of Albanian in state examinations is a right guaranteed under existing legislation.

The support expressed by the European Parliament is being viewed as a strong political and institutional signal to North Macedonian authorities to find a swift and fair solution to the issue.

The European Parliament’s decision is considered an important step in protecting the rights of Albanians in North Macedonia and a clear message that the full implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement remains one of the key priorities in the country’s European integration process.
