European Wrestling Championships kicks off in Tirana with over 600 athletes competing

TIRANA, April 21 – The European Wrestling Championships for seniors kicks off in Tirana, hosting more than 600 athletes from 38 countries from April 20 to 26, 2026. The event takes place at the Olympic Park “Feti Borova,” where the official opening ceremony marked the start of competitions.

Organizers scheduled contests across three disciplines: freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s wrestling. Matches began with Greco-Roman categories, including 55, 63, 77, 87, and 130 kilograms, with qualification rounds and quarterfinals held in the morning and semifinals later in the day.

The Albanian Wrestling Federation said the tournament offers an opportunity to promote the country internationally. Officials also highlighted parallel activities, including the General Assembly of United World Wrestling Europe and training seminars for referees.

As the competition continues through the week, finals will determine medal winners across all categories. Albania’s representatives have already competed in early rounds, while authorities expect the event to support the country’s profile as a host for international sports competitions.
